Time Saving Tips and Services for Mamas

For me, motherhood has been an extreme exercise in time management. I work full-time and mama full-time. To get things done, I need to plan and prioritize way more than I ever used to. I also need to call in outside help. Interestingly, I actually feel that I’ve become more productive now that I’m a mama because I've had to implement some serious time management tools. I am by no means an expert, but here are some practices and services that have helped me this year.

Write lists. Sit down every year, month, week and day and decide what it is you want to accomplish. Write a list of tasks that will help you accomplish these things. Each day write down a list of these tasks that are 'must-do' and do everything in your power to accomplish them (it is helpful to do those things first). 

Save time for the unknown. I'm still working on this one. I have run into the experience when I'll have my whole day scheduled out and something unexpected will come up (husband wants to go to dinner! WiFi goes down!!) and it throws everything for a loop / gets me off track / makes me angry. By scheduling in some time for the unknown, the stress caused by the inevitable unknown circumstances can be curbed.

Enlist outside help. Note which activities cause you stress or take too much time and enlist outside help. 

Here are some services that may help save you mama time:

Instacart -  I love Instacart. I can shop at Whole Foods or Publix without leaving my couch, which is amazing for weeks when I'm particularly busy. Daily Harvest - I am kind of obsessed with Daily Harvest right now. Their smoothies, bowls and oatmeals come frozen and then have very simple preparation instructions. Also, the dishes with this service are minimal, which is ideal for breakfasts and lunches at home. My favorite dish du jour is the cauliflower rice and pesto harvest bowl. 

HIIT - don't have time to hit the gym? try doing a 10 minute HIIT workout. Research has shown that High Intensity Interval workouts may have the same healthful effects as longer form workouts. 

Yogaglo -I've found getting to a yoga class to actually be one of the hardest things to do as a new mama. Yogaglo is awesome because they stream classes from some of the best yoga teachers in the country. You don't even have to leave your living room. They also have a nice variety of styles and lengths. A subscription costs $18 / month, which depending on where you live is cheaper than taking 1 class at many studios.

Blue Apron - Our family loves Blue Apron. It completely eliminates time spent planning and shopping. Prep is fairly simple and isn't too time consuming (though it always takes me more time than they say).  Also, they source excellent quality meats and produce from small farmers.

Instapaper - I realized that I was wasting a ton of time reading all of me emails, so I started go through and unsubscribing from all of the email subscriptions that no longer serve me about once a quarter. I have also started scanning my emails and saving them and articles to read later on Instapaper when I have time (like right before bed or on a long plane ride or if I'm stuck without wifi). You can download the articles to your device to read when you are without connectivity. 

Amazon Subscribe - subscription services are an excellent time saver. We have items like toilet paper, diapers, wipes, laundry detergent etc. set to deliver automatically. This frees up energy and time that would have been spent on monotonous shopping.
