Postnatal Healing Resources

We need more postpartum support built into our system.

After months of regular visits to the doctor and three-ish days of full on support from hospital staff, American women are sent home with a tiny little fragile life and a packet of information. To make matters worse, many of us live far away from our extended family, leaving us basically alone to navigate the fragile postpartum period.

Instead of heading home with the expectations of 'getting back to normal,' this should be a time of deep healing during which we should receive support from our communities.

Thankfully, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recently released new recommendations that state that "postpartum care should be an ongoing process, rather than a single encounter" and suggest that the postpartum visits should include an assessment of: mood and emotional well-being, physical recovery from birth, sexuality contraception and birth spacing, sleep and fatigue and more.

This is a phenomenal step, but this holistic viewpoint it has not yet been integrated into our system. Until it is (and even then, really), we should take our well being into our own hands and really give ourselves the healing that we need.

I've put together a list of mind-body resources available to postpartum women. I've started in Miami, where I live and am familiar. I am sure that this is by no means a comprehensive list.
